STARTALK GOOD WILL

STARTALK GOOD WILL PROGRAM is a Chinese Language Immersion Program for students at a high school level to learn Chinese as a foreign/second language. It is sponsored by the Southern California Council of Chinese Schools (SCCCS) and funded by the STARTALK project that is managed by the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.

The STARTALK GOOD WILL PROGRAM offers students a nurturing, supportive environment in which to learn Mandarin Chinese, indoor and outdoor fun cultural activities, and quality teaching. For summer 2007, there are three proficiency levels offered to the students at selected Chinese heritage schools. The STARTALK GOOD WILL PROGRAM can accommodate up to 320 students. An entry proficiency assessment will be conducted for instructional planning purposes, and an exit proficiency assessment will be used to determine the students’ measurable outcome. Formative evaluation for student progress will be conducted primarily through listening, reading, oral, and written assessments throughout the program. The program also provides a special bilingual Mathematics class (taught in Chinese and in English), which is made available for students from the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Performance Guidelines for K-12 Learners promoted by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language (ACTFL) will be used. Course Levels are:

Level 1 (Novice to Novice-Low),
Level 2 (Novice-Medium to Novice- High)
Level 3 (Novice- High to Intermediate-Low)
Level 4 (Intermediate-Medium to Intermediate- High).

Each course will last 5 weeks (June 25 through July 26) with some schools extending courses into the 6th week. There will be a total of 48 in-class instruction hours plus 36 additional hours for special projects and cultural-related activities and events. Upon meeting all course requirements and passing the final exit assessment test, students may be entitled to become a STARTALK Scholar and earn up to 5 credits/units for their high school foreign language course requirements.
