ABOUT US

The Southern California Council of Chinese Schools (SCCCS) is an organization dedicated to nurturing of bilingual youth talents and a non-profit tax exempted organization that was founded in 1976, operated mainly by volunteers from its member schools. It is the largest volunteer organization in the Chinese American community of California with 114 Chinese schools, close to 1000 teachers and over 16,000 registered students represented in its membership. These 114 Chinese schools cover an area as wide from Fresno to San Diego, even extending into Arizona and southern Nevada.

SCCCS holds a total of eleven large competitions, activities, and conferences each year. The Chinese Speech Competition, Chinese Essay and Drawing Competition, Chinese History Bee Contest, Chinese Culture Summer Camp, Chinese Culture Festival, and Overseas Teaching Volunteer Program each claim around 200 to 700 students of the Chinese language each year, while two conferences in February and July boast an attendance by over 300 teachers on the professional development in Chinese Language Instruction. The Chinese Culture Summer Camp has been annually held in Big Bear Lake area for 21 years. 240 students learn Chinese folk dance, Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese folk arts and other Chinese cultures during this week-long activity each year. SCCCS also cooperates with several large banks, insurance companies, and local companies to sponsor and provide over 50 scholarships annually to Chinese language learners.

The Southern California Council of Chinese Schools works with school districts and various organizations to provide the best Chinese language immersion program in the United States. After the College Board's implementation of the guideline for the AP Chinese Language and Culture curriculum and assessment process in 2006, SCCCS has devoted even more efforts to help our teachers in their professional development through on-going professional workshops on learner-center curriculum design and Chinese language instruction. The Council promotes accountability and reliability of teaching and validity of students’ learning within Chinese heritage schools to meet the National Standards of Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century.
