PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT


Brief

The Entry Proficiency Assessment Test and The Post Proficiency Assessment Test will be offered by the Test Of Proficiency-Huayu(TOP)for Beginners that is designed and conducted by Steering Committee for the Test Of Proficiency-Huayu(SC-TOP)in Taiwan. The test measures both listening and reading skills of non-native Chinese speakers at the beginning level. The content of the test in general focuses on everyday speech incorporated in various situations. As for the test structure, TOP for Beginners consists of a variety of task types as shown in table 1. The first test to be offered in a paper-based format will be administrated in Taiwan in Nov. 2007.

Candidates

  1. Candidates beyond the age of 16 who have taken up to 240-360 hours (about a half year) of Chinese courses in Taiwan or learned Chinese up to one year outside of Taiwan are welcome to take the test.
  2. Candidates who have acquired up to a vocabulary base of 800 words as well as basic Chinese grammar may also take the test.

Description of Examinee’s language ability

TOP for Beginners is at level A1 of CEF (The Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment). The description of level Al of CEF is as follows. Candidates can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type; can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has; can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
